E-mail addresses

What do military e-mail addresses look like?  What would an SGC e-mail address look like?  Pentagon e-mail addresses?  Would a civilian SGC employee's work e-mail address be different than a military SGC employee's work e-mail address?  (In other words, in seasons 9-10, what would Vala, Jack, Daniel, Sam, Teal'c, Cameron, and possibly Landry have for e-mail addresses?)

Some information here. Everyone would get an email. The general domain is af.mil, but every base had its own subdomain, f'rex, @lackland.af.mil (or, I guess, @cheyenne.af.mil). Newly-issued email these days is simply @us.af.mil, but it's a slow process and the old emails are grandfathered. Usernames are firstname.lastname or sometimes firstname.lastname2,

It might make sense to have daniel.jackson@cheyenne.af.mil, but cameron.mitchell@us.af.mil, I think?

This kind of stuff is too fun to figure out sometimes. :)

(ETA: This is all Air Force--the Marines, etc. have their own email system)

I don't know if there are apostrophes; and for Teal'c and Vala, would they be their real names, or their fake names (eg. Murray)?

What about just plain tealc@cheyenne.af.mil? I know it's not typical, but I can totally imagine Teal'c being implacable about his name being Teal'c, not Teal'c Chulak (are people supposed to call him Mr. Chulak?) and Daniel arguing they should respect Jaffa naming conventions until Hammond caved. *g* Just a thought!

Dad's when he was active-duty was firstname.lastname2@base.af.mil, the 2 because there was already a Firstname Lastname with an email associated with that base. So I'm gonna go with samantha.carter@cheyenne.af.mil. Unless it's sgc.af.mil. Don't know how Pentagon addresses differ, but my money's on pentagon.af.mil.

I believe the Pentagon email addresses are first.last @ dod.mil "The Pentagon" is the common name for the building that houses the Department of Defense (DoD).

Since the SGC is classified, everything is routed through Peterson AFB. Carter's would be samantha.carter@peterson.af.mil You can follow that convention for everyone at Cheyenne since they've been there well over a decade or you could go with @norad.af.mil as Cheyenne is the name of the whole complex not the name of the base.

Yeah, I've given John Sheppard's address as john.sheppard@peterson.af.mil, especially as I can't imagine that john.sheppard@atlantis.af.mil would be at all good for security! Plus, his brother says in Outcast, "I contacted your unit commander at Peterson," so I have to assume John's email gets routed through there as well.

Oooh, good point on Cheyenne vs. Peterson.

From what I can tell, Cheyenne is NORAD is Peterson AFB. It's all one and the same. NORAD is located inside Cheyenne Mountain with Peterson the topside/official front for the whole operation. NORAD is a joint US/Canadian mission. The SGC is *not* a part of NORAD but does occupy the lower levels of the mountain. So, anyone who works for the SGC, military or civilian, would have a Peterson email addy or a generic USAF email addy. The same holds true for anyone who works for NORAD.

I'd really hate to be in charge of IT for that bunch.

The most logical email address would be first.last@NORAD.af.mil (and in Teal'c's case, just first) as it would jibe with their theoretical cover story. The shift to af.mil has begun only in recent years, but in the time period you are referring to email addresses would have been tied to the actual base.

btw, Peterson AFB is about 30 minutes across town from the approximate location of Cheyenne Mountain Air Station and the Air Force Academy is about 30 minutes north. Fort Carson, on the other hand, is about 10 minutes away. I always wondered why medical emergencies (like off world refugees) were not routed to the nearby Army base instead of the Academy :)

The Academy is part of the Air Force whereas the Army base means a lot more paperwork as you are crossing branches of the military.

Since security and minimising risk to a covert taskforce/team, keeping it "in house" so to speak makes it easier to maintain direct chain of command and security.

Just my 2 cents worth.

perhaps, but they have no trouble schlepping myself and my children to the nearest military base...NOT the nearest AF base...for medical care. And a military id gets you into any commissary or BX/PX etc
